Renewable Energy - Renewable Energy News

On Monday, November 30, Sierra Club and Friends of the Earth were present at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Department of Energy biomass facility being constructed at the Savannah River site.  While Sierra has serious questions about the sustainability and the environmental consequences of biomass, we were glad to see it

was a non-nuclear  mission.  We also delivered our message opposing the dumping of irradiated nuclear fuel and its reprocessing at the SRS, an environmentally disastrous technology, which would add tremendously to our already monumental radioactive waste burden.  Sierra Club opposes reprocessing and advocates that other technologies than nuclear be implemented for our energy future, that do not create this legacy of toxic waste for which there is no environmentally safe disposal.
