EPA Changes to Kentucky Coal Mine Permit Protect Water Quality and the Environment

We don’t normally use this space for information about areas outside of the South Carolina / North Carolina / Georgia area, but we thought that the last paragraph where the EPA’s estimation of the environmental impact of Coal Mining and energy production was particularly telling.

(ATLANTA – July 23, 2010) - Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a Clean Water Act (CWA) permit to Czar Coal Corporation for the Scaffold Lick Branch Coarse Refuse Storage Site project in eastern Kentucky.

The first part of the Sierra Club motto is “to explore” our environment.  What better way to explore South Carolina than as part of an Outings team.  To aid in more easily taking on the mantle of Outings Leader, National Sierra Club has set up a weekend training trip at Gold Head Branch State Park near Keystone Heights, Florida.

Land Donation Protects Watershed

Land that had been in James Mullis’ family for more than half a century is now part of an effort to preserve and protect water quality in Richland County.

In a dedication ceremony on the 75-acre parcel off Lawhorn Road last Thursday, Mullis and members of his family donated the easement, which will provide long-term protection for on e of the county’s valuable stream corridors.  The Mullis property surrounds the 25-mile creek watershed that drains directly into the Wateree River.
