Outings Leader Training Event

tent

The first part of the Sierra Club motto is “to explore” our environment.  What better way to explore South Carolina than as part of an Outings team.  To aid in more easily taking on the mantle of Outings Leader, National Sierra Club has set up a weekend training trip at Gold Head Branch State Park near Keystone Heights, Florida.

As you may know, there are two levels of Outings Leadership Training that you can complete and once you’ve gone through the weekend’s training, you will be certified for OLT 101 & 201 outings.  To refresh your memory, those level designations are:

OLT 101 is the basic training that all Sierra Club leaders need to take and stay current with (every four years).  OLT 101 covers Sierra Club Outings history and organizational structure, basic trip planning steps, Sierra Club policies and procedures, details on restricted outings (youth oriented, watercraft, challenge course, mountaineering) and much more.  Leaders need to renew OLT 101 every four years in order to update their knowledge around new policies, procedures, etc.

OLT 201 provides leaders with the skills to address issues that may arise on longer duration, more remote outings: challenging interpersonal situations, challenging participants, challenging logistical issues and much more.  Upon completion of OLT 201, leaders should have improved their skills, competence and confidence in being able to conduct overnight outings that result in safe, happy and inspired participants.

Here are the details of the trip:

Location: At the Gold Head Branch State Park near Keystone Heights, FL (about 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville).

Starts: Friday, October 29.  Check-in and dinner are from 6 p.m. onward.  Opening program is at 7:30 p.m. sharp

Ends: Sunday, October 31, with lunch (around 12:30 p.m.)

Cost: $45 -- Includes meals (Fri. dinner - Sun. lunch) and bunk-style cabin lodging for Fri-Sat.
