One of the unique things about Sierra Club is our ability to endorse political candidates and get involved in political campaigns. This is why we distinguish between our C-3, or tax deductible funding, and our C-4 funding. This C-4 money is much harder for us to raise, but it's what enables us to look critically at candidates and, through a special process, endorse or advocate for certain candidates during an election.
This process, however, requires training. National Sierra Club is very strict in requiring a specific protocol be followed for the endorsement process. This is why each Chapter has the option to offer Political Training. We are fortunate in that we have two members who are well trained and skilled in this process, and they are willing to train others so we can be politically active in this important election year.
Two upstate members of the Bartram group, Kathleen Kempe and Ron Sobczak, are the political trainers, and they have volunteered to lead a training session in March for all interested members. They have said the training can be done with a conference call, so there is no need for a face-to-face meeting, which eliminates the need for travel. The chapter office will be scheduling this training very soon, in the middle part of March. Please call the office or email Kurt Henning and let him know if you are interested in taking part in this training. Get involved in endorsing local candidates with good environmental records or platforms! Get Political!
